US veterans get compensation

Some of the 2.6 million US Vietnam veterans had also started to complain of illnesses that they sourced to exposure to Agent Orange in Vietnam - they ranged from skin diseases to lung, larynx and prostate cancer.

In 1983 veterans originated a class action in New York against the manufacturers of the defoliant, including Dow Chemical and Monsanto.

By 1998 nearly 6000 US veterans had qualified for compensation related to their exposure to Agent Orange. Those severely disabled and homebound get up to $US5000 a month.

In Vietnam, disabled veterans from the North Vietnamese Army get $US7 a month.
